How Does Steel Grade Affect Space Frame Selection? Q235, Q345 and Q355
最新の会社ニュース How Does Steel Grade Affect Space Frame Selection? Q235, Q345 and Q355

Why Grade Comes Before Size

When a steel space frame is specified, the steel grade is sometimes treated as an afterthought — "just use Q235." In practice, the grade decides how much force each member and node can carry for a given section, so it shapes member size, fabrication, welding, and how the frame matches the project's design standard. Choosing the grade early keeps the rest of the design consistent.

Grade and design work together. A change in grade can change member sizes, which changes node loads, which can change the connection detail — so settling the grade early avoids redesign later. The goal is not the highest grade, but the grade that matches the loads and the governing standard with the least complication.

Four Ways Steel Grade Affects the Design

1. Strength

Higher-grade steel has a higher yield strength, meaning it can carry more force before it starts to yield. Q345 / S355JR delivers more strength per unit of material than Q235 / S235JR. This difference matters most where span and load push member forces high, such as long clear spans with heavy roof loads. Strength is not only about breaking: it governs how much a member deflects and how much reserve it keeps under combined loads. The design standard sets the allowable stress for each grade, so the safe working level follows directly from the grade chosen.

2. Member Size

Because a stronger grade carries more force in the same section, it can allow smaller or fewer members for a given load, which can reduce overall weight and ease transport and handling. The trade-off is that using a higher grade where it is not needed adds cost without real benefit, so the choice should follow the load case rather than a habit. Smaller members are also easier to handle and transport, and they can reduce the load passed to columns and foundations — an effect that is easy to miss when grades are compared on steel price alone.

3. Welding and Fabrication

Grade influences the welding procedure, filler material, and quality control needed at nodes and joints. Higher-strength steels generally demand closer attention to welding parameters and inspection, so fabrication planning should match the grade selected. Node type — bolt ball or welded ball — interacts with this, since welded nodes put more demand on procedure control. In practice, this means the fabrication shop must know the grade before it plans procedures, not after, because the two are linked at the drawing stage.

4. Project Standard

The grade must align with the design standard of the project's country and with the engineer's calculation. Q235/S235JR and Q345/S355JR are common across many markets, but the correct choice is the one the applicable standard and the structural design call for — not a supplier default. Two projects in different countries can need different grades for the same building, purely because their standards define strength classes and safety factors differently, so local requirements come first.

What This Means for Real Products

Many steel space frames are supplied in Q235 / S235JR and Q345 / S355JR, with members and nodes fabricated to the project drawings and protected by hot-dip galvanizing or painting. Q355 / S355JR higher-grade steel is also discussed in the industry, and it is a reasonable topic in a selection conversation — but it should be presented as an engineering option to be confirmed against the design, not as a standard configuration applied to every product. Buyers should ask which grade a specific offer is made from, and check that the grade matches their design standard before comparing quotations. The practical rule is simple: ask, and verify. A grade on a drawing should appear in the offer, in the mill certificates, and in the delivered material. If a buyer intends to specify a grade above the common Q235/Q345 range, that intention should be stated at enquiry so the design is carried out on the right basis from the start.

Information Needed Before Selecting Steel Grade

Gather these inputs before the grade is fixed:

Information Needed Why it matters
Country Sets the applicable design standard
Design standard Defines permitted grades and safety factors
Span Drives member forces and section size
Load Dead, live, wind, and snow demands
Environment Corrosion exposure and protection choice
Welding requirement Sets procedure and inspection level

A Selection, Not a Default

Steel grade is a design decision, not a label. Confirm the strength need, member sizing, fabrication and welding implications, and the governing standard together, then ask the supplier to state the grade actually quoted for the project. That keeps the frame's performance tied to calculation and standard, rather than to assumption.
